People follow who you are
You can ask others to be on time, but they will watch whether you are. You can ask for focus, but they will copy the face you pull when the conductor corrects you. A leader sets the temperature of a room without meaning to. This is a gift and a responsibility: the example you set quietly shapes people more than anything you announce.
Integrity simply means being the same person when no one is checking as when everyone is. It is practising the hard passage at home, telling the truth when you dropped the ball, and treating the least confident member exactly as well as the most talented one.
Small consistencies, repeated
What helps: pick two or three things you will always do, and do them every single time. Turn up early. Have your music marked and ready. Speak well of people who are not in the room. Say sorry quickly when you get it wrong. You will not always feel like a leader, and that is fine. Character is not a feeling; it is a set of habits you keep on the days you do not feel like it, and those habits are what people come to trust.
